Hundreds join Freeport Flag Ladies to mark 9/11: Gov. LePage, entire Maine congressional delegation among state dignitaries on hand

FREEPORT — The Freeport Flag Ladies maintained their decade-long tradition of waving the Stars and Stripes and were joined by Gov. Paul LePage, Maine’s entire congressional delegation, the commanding general of the state’s National Guard and several hundred others in a show of patriotism on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The group paused twice for moments of silence at the precise times that hijacked jetliners flew into the World Trade Center’s twin towers.

But the ceremony wasn’t all somber. Motorists honked their horns as people flanking both sides of Freeport’s Main Street cheered and waved their flags.

Passport promo: More getting out to state parks | Lewiston Sun Journal

Cameron Beach, 11, of Lewiston, liked finding horseshoe crab shells at Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Freeport.

“We saw the ocean, but not 50 yards from shore were woods. We walked around and hiked and ate lunch in an opening field. It was really nice.”

Emily Kozak, 11, of Auburn, liked probing tidal pools at Popham Beach State Park. “We found crabs. We observed them and put them back in the water,” she said. Emily enjoyed swimming at Rangeley Lake State Park and looking for moose. They didn’t see any moose, but did discover a painted turtle. “It was really fun,” she said.

Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine Auburn-Lewiston Clubhouse, Emily and Cameron have visited some state parks they’ve never been to using the “Maine State Park Passport.” It’s a new passport-designed booklet created to encourage more visits at more state parks.

It’s working.

‘Maine Friends of Haiti’ is woman’s way of pitching in | Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

Web site to link Maine resources

for Haiti aid uses woman’s media skills

Mary Doyle doesn’t have medical expertise or a lot of disposable income for charitable donations, but she wanted to do her part for the people of Haiti and the Mainers who are helping there.

She does have a knack for bringing people together and developing Web sites, so she tapped those skills to create the Maine Friends of Haiti Web site.

The site lists the large number of Maine groups working to help the people affected by the Caribbean nation’s devastating earthquake, which hit Jan. 12, killing more than 200,000 people and leaving 1.5 million more homeless.

“I tried to think of something that could be helpful,” Doyle said. “There was no Web site or group that was tying all the different efforts together.”
