Coffeehouse observation No. 166

The educational system in this country is letting down a lot of people. A guy in empresso just now commented on my hat – Boston Red Sox cap – and I said that I had grown up in New England.

“Oh, really! I’ve heard there’s a lot of great music in the UK.”

“No, I grew up in NEW England. Not the UK.”

“What’s the difference?”

“New England. It’s made up of the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.”

“Oh …”

For crying out loud, people! New England and the Atlantic states are the R&D labs for this experiment called the United States of America. It is a hugely important part of this country.

Editorial support for breaking away from Mass.

I’ve been in newspapers for 22 years or so and found the DownEast.com trivia question of interest.

What was the name of Maine’s first newspaper?

Answer:

The Falmouth Gazette and Weekly Advertiser began in 1785 and was used to promote separation from Massachusetts.

Offshore wind farm could save $4.6 billion over 25 years

Below are several links, including one to a press release found on Sustainablebusiness.com about a report published by economic consulting firm Charles River Associates. That report apparently suggests that the Cape Wind offshore wind farm alone could save $4.6 billion – that’s with a B – over the next quarter century.

The proposed project would be off the coast of Massachusetts in Nantucket Sound. It is not stretch that proportionally similar savings could be realized from the eventual construction of a proposed project off Maine’s coast.

Of course, such reports usually are funded by the agency that would benefit. Cape Wind Associates LLC funded the report, according to a news story about the report.
